Bambuda Castle
From the moment my Panama adventure began, I connected with fellow travelers who, like me, were navigating a vacation within the framework of Covid. It added a new layer of bonding to the typical solo adventurer connection that I had previously experienced.
Inevitably, when I met new people making their way around Panama, a string of similar questions would occur:
What’s your name?
Where is home?
Where in Panama did you just come from?
Where are you heading next?
Like an invisible checklist, I faithfully tallied off these questions during initial meetings, understanding that it is par for the course when you travel. What surprised me, however, that there was one interesting pattern that emerged in response to these questions.
Two words: Bambuda Castle.
Claiming to be the only castle in Central America, this gorgeous lodging sits nestled in the mountains, creating a picturesque scene replete with clouds, jungle greenery, and stately architecture.
The fun part? Bambuda Castle is a hostel.
This means it’s affordable for any traveler on a budget, which is why it’s such a popular destination regardless of whom you ask.
I’m glad I reserved my bed sooner rather than later. Even though previous hostels I had stayed at in Panama were at minimum capacity, Bambuda Castle was keeping up even during the pandemic. When I walked in for the first time, I was absolutely blown away by all of the unique amenities.
An indoor swimming pool with a beautiful view over the mountains.
A hot tub that spilled into aforementioned pool.
A loft for watching movies in one of the castle’s turrets.
The most delicious food I ate in all of Panama.
Let’s revisit that last one again:
The most delicious food I ate in all of Panama.
It’s true! I had fresh-caught lobster in the San Blas islands and went to some pretty spectacular eateries in Bocas Town, but the Bambuda Castle cuisine takes the cake. The menu changed daily and had a small selection of food made with absolute excellence. The portions were significant, meaning I had lunch the next day after squirrelling away my leftovers in the hostel fridge.
After one night at Bambuda Castle, I decided to up my game.
I moved into a delightful Hobbit Hole adjacent to the castle itself. I had my own recently-renovated room and bath, yet still access to the general areas in the main Castle that were key features of my stay.
All in all, a fabulous place to lodge, with a terrific view and delightful ambiance. Five out of five stars.
