Treetop Adventure
When I was in Panama, the majority of my time was spent sailing around islands or exploring the shoreline along a gorgeous beach. Yet there was a big space in my heart for the rainforest. Those cooler, higher elevations with a consistent misty cover beckoned to me as I road the public bus miles upon miles, ever climbing in altitude.
Over 40% of Panama is rainforest, yet a significant majority of this area is undeveloped and uninhabited. I had recently arrived at Bambuda Castle, a delightful hostel located at the base of a cloud forest. Boquete is an expat’s paradise, drawing a significant number of American and Canadian retirees with promises of more moderate temperatures and a cheap approach to retirement.
For my particular adventure, however, I had to journey outside of this bustling small city. I boarded an all-terrain vehicle that slowly but surely climbed up, up, and up.
The weather changed gradually; the thick clouds descended and the air cooled around me. I was glad I had brought an extra jacket which seemed radically superfluous as I packed for this day excursion. A local Panamanian joined me on my hike – a genuine tree-top adventure replete with hanging suspension bridges and a detailed explanation of local flora and fauna.
I learned that it’s best not to touch anything in the rainforest, because everything might irritate your skin.
I looked at semi-dangerous fungi that would cause an instantaneous break-out on skin upon contact.
I was warned against the infamous tarantula hawk, a creature with one of the most painful stings known to humans.
Despite the inherent dangers, I reveled in the beauty that I saw around me. I spotted gorgeous flowers, gold beetles, and enough lush greenery to take your breath away. The waterfalls made me happy, and the suspended bridges drew me in with a promise of adventure.
It was good place to be, and reflecting upon it now, I miss the feel, the space, the people of Panama.
Maybe I shall soon return.
