Island Hopper Extraordinaire: Five Islands in One Day
Adriatic sea + five islands + warm sunshine + cool water = bliss.
I took a quick break from Croatia’s national parks (Paklenica and Plitvice) to experience life on the coast. There are over a thousand islands that Croatia considers its own, all varying in size and degree of settlement. I decided to visit five of them in one day, knowing full-well that I would be sun-kissed and exhausted come evening.
Some quick highlights before I dive into details:
- I swam in the clearest water I’ve ever seen
- I also swam in the bluest water I’ve ever seen
- I didn’t get sunburned (surprise)
- I visited a blue cave that is completely natural, caused by sunlight, limestone, and white sand reflection
- I explored beautiful small towns
- I hiked up to a fortress
- I lazed away on a pebble beach
- I was accosted by a donkey, one of the three permanent residents on one tiny island I saw
Seeing the Blue Caves of Hvar was probably one of the most memorable moments of the day. I had to transfer to a smaller boat that would squeeze into the cave. I ducked my head per the instructions of the boatman and then let my eyes adjust to the murky light. The blueness surrounding me seemed fake, almost as if there were hidden electrical lights causing the cool azure hue. I sat in silence enjoying this unusual place, working on embedding the view and comfortable feeling into my memory.
Picture’s don’t do it justice, but look at that pretty blue color and imagine floating peacefully in this sacred space.
Another one of my favorite activities was visiting the small towns on the islands. The narrow streets and distinctive architecture were very interesting to explore. The flowers were in full-bloom, and the small harbors were absolutely adorable.
And then the beaches! I went to three different shores with all varying levels of sediment variety and water clarity. It was quite chilly at first, but felt delicious compared to the warm Mediterranean sun once my body temperature adjusted.
All in all, it was a fantastic day full of natural wonders, interesting cultural marvels, and yummy island foods.
