Hume Lake: A Mountain-Beach Fusion
I enjoy the mountains – the sharp majestic peaks or the gentler rounded ranges that go on as far as the eye can see.
I enjoy the beach – the sand between my toes, the cool water on summer days, and the accepted laziness that comes along with it.
During my last-minute trip into the Sierras, I got to experience both beach and mountains in a spectacular place known as Hume Lake.
Hume Lake is a manufactured reservoir situated on one of the many tributaries in King’s Canyon National park. The fact that it wasn’t entirely natural didn’t bother me. I was excited at the little private beach areas (with real sand!) hidden in amongst the trees. I started the day by walking the full three miles around the lake, relishing the fresh air and trifecta of water, peaks, and trees.
I found the perfect spot for a picnic lunch! After I took off my shoes and rolled up my shorts, I waded out to a small rocky island. I closed my eyes and soaked up the sun, sitting for close to an hour simply enjoying the multi-sensory experience.
As the day grew warmer, I figured it was time to swim. I had found some private beach spots off the main trail that would be perfect for an afternoon of reading, playing in the sand, and, of course, going into the water. I trekked back to my car, reapplied sunscreen, and gleefully went to “the beach”. Although some would argue that a manufactured reservoir at 5,000 + feet doesn’t technically count as a beach, I beg to differ. There was a sandy shore, 70 degree water, and an enough balance of shade and sunshine.
It was the perfect way to start my trip, and I replayed the flawless day in my mind as I set up camp that evening among the giant sequoia trees. My burgeoning freckles served as a testament to my first full-day of Sierra Nevada fun.
I couldn’t wait for more to come.
